#prosDOIT : Self Breast Exam How, When, Why & Pros Tips

We’ve all seen the pink bow and we know what it means, every October we spend a whole month fundraising for a Breast cancer cure in Canada. So with a whole month, every year, dedicated to reminding us why it’s so important to grab our titties regularly, do we do it?

Survey amongst the PROS we know says…. not as often as we should! There were a few questions that came up during our discussion as well, so we will try to address those in this PROS feature… GRAB THOSE TITTIES!

Before we dive into the PROS TIPS around titty grabbing, I would be amiss to not say the reason I was inspired to write this article is that a friend of ours is trying to KICK Cancers A$$ right now. SO before you start thinking about those perfect hand companions attached to your chest, please take a min to check out or share our fundraiser HELP CHASE FUCK CANCER

Let’s start with the WHEN should you grab your titties…

There seemed to be confusion among the PROS we chatted with, as to WHEN to start checking out your titties. It’s a common misconception that you have to wait until a certain age to start groping your breasts (for the sake of your health). This couldn’t be further from the truth. Although statistically, Breast Cancer is more common in mature women, it can present in all genders and all ages. You should make grabbing your titties a regular habit, starting right NOW.

Of course, we have heard the ‘member trick of doing a breast examination during your menstrual cycle, (The best time to do a monthly self-breast exam is about 3 to 5 days after your period starts) but what if you don’t have one due to birth control, or other reasons? Our PROS had some tricks for their own regular SBE.

  • Follow #feelthemonthefirst to help you remember to start the month feeling yourself up.
  • I’m boob-obsessed so I do a lot of functional groping. My BSE reminder is just PornHub.
  • Set a monthly alarm on your phone, or schedule some “grope me time” on your calendar.

PROS TIP~

Regardless of when you grope your titties, it should be done at a regular time every month, PROS do it multiple times a month…

Breast Cancer can affect any age or any sex – we all have breast tissue

It is estimated that about 1 in 8 Canadian women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime and 1 in 34 will die from it.

For more information about cancer statistics, go to Canadian Cancer Statistics.

With those odds, I’m probably going to die of Breast Cancer anyways…

NOPE! You have the ability to be part of the 89% of Canadian Breast Cancer survivors in remission for five years or longer. We are sure you have seen these warriors running around in October to fundraise and bring awareness to how YOU, can use early prevention to increase your odds of living a life free of Breast Cancer, just like they are. The key to success is early detection, and the key to that is…you guessed it – grab those titties.

PROS TIP~

Offer to grab a friend’s titties as well, sharing is caring.

If the invasive breast cancer is located only in the breast, the 5-year survival rate of women with this disease is 99%. Sixty-five percent (65%) of women with breast cancer are diagnosed with this stage.

OK, show me how to GROPE those TITTIES

FIRST – Take a look at your fine self…

Sit or stand shirtless and braless in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides.

  • Face forward and look for puckering, dimpling, or changes in size, shape, or symmetry.
  • Check to see if your nipples are turned in (inverted).
  • Inspect your breasts with your hands pressed down on your hips.
  • Inspect your breasts with your arms raised overhead and your hands pressed together.
  • Lift your breasts to see if ridges along the bottom are symmetrical.

If you have a vision impairment that makes it difficult for you to visually inspect your breasts, ask a friend or a family member to help you.

NEXT – Let’s get to the groping part…

Lying down. When lying down, the breast tissue spreads out, making it thinner and easier to feel.

In the shower. Lather up with soap to help your fingers glide more smoothly over your skin.

PROS KNOW HOW TO DO IT

When examining your breasts, some general tips to keep in mind include:

  • Use the pads of your fingers. Use the pads, not the very tips, of your three middle fingers for the exam. If you have difficulty feeling with your finger pads, use another part of your hand that is more sensitive, such as your palm or the backs of your fingers.
  • Use different pressure levels. Your goal is to feel different depths of the breast by using different levels of pressure to feel all the breast tissue. Use light pressure to feel the tissue closest to the skin, medium pressure to feel a little deeper, and firm pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest and ribs. Be sure to use each pressure level before moving on to the next spot. If you’re not sure how hard to press, talk with your doctor or nurse.
  • Take your time. Don’t rush. It may take several minutes to carefully examine your breasts.
  • Follow a pattern. Use a methodical technique to ensure you examine your entire breast. For instance, imagine the face of a clock over your breast or the slices of a pie. Begin near your collarbone and examine that section, moving your fingers toward your nipple. Then move your fingers to the next section.

If you have a diverse ability that makes it difficult to examine your breasts using this technique, Ask your doctor to show you ways you can examine your breasts.

OH F#CK – I think I have Cancer

What’s normal

Many women find lumps or changes in their breasts since some of these are normal changes that occur at various points in the menstrual cycles. Finding a change or lump in your breast is not a reason to panic. Breasts often feel different in different places. A firm ridge along the bottom of each breast is normal, for instance. The look and feel of your breasts will change as you age.

When to contact your doctor

Make an appointment with your doctor if you notice:

  • A hard lump or knot near your underarm
  • Changes in the way your breasts look or feel
  • Dimples, puckers, bulges, or ridges on the skin of your breast
  • A recent change in a nipple to become pushed in (inverted)
  • Redness, warmth, swelling, or pain
  • Itching, scales, sores, or rashes
  • Bloody nipple discharge

Of course, if all that seems too intimidating, you can always…
